My husband and I have been traveling together for over 20 years now, mostly in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. It's a little depressing to see the changes that increased tourism is bringing to some of our favorite cities in Spain and Portugal. And yet the local economy remains depressed.
And then there's climate change, which is having a huge impact, even in the north They're not used to seeing temperatures so high. Frankly, it's scary.

| We hesitate for a week in Vigo, and there the biggest heat wave of the summer found us. We hid out in cafés quite a bit, though even cafés aren't generally air conditioned. Certainly rental apartments aren't. The near 100 F. temperatures don't encourage much wandering by the port or through the streets. It was way too hot for hanging around sketching outdoors! The seafood is of course excellent. (A good way to get a taste of Vigo is through the movie Los Lunes al Sol by Fernando León de Aranoa.) |

| We had a couple of days in León, which we always enjoy. We have of course made friends, over the years, with the proprietor of our favorite tapas bar (I admit that this is a pattern or ours). |
