Touring Taichung at Asia-Link Sketchwalk 2018
[By Chris Haldane in Sydney]Earlier this month, fifteen Aussies joined sketchers from all over Asia in Taiwan at the Asia-Link Sketchwalk in Taichung for a long weekend of meeting old friends, workshops and, of course, sketching! As people arrived on the opening afternoon excitement built, and it was great to see the square outside the old railway station filling with sketchers already at work, capturing the skyline along Taiwan Boulevard. I loved the colourful signs and rhythm between the buildings.
Taichung is a busy city and its street corners like the one below on Jiguang St with its overload of signage were tempting to draw. I hardly ever need to fill the red section in my paint box at home in Australia, but I went through more red this time than I have on any other holiday!
A peaceful spot away from the rush and the crowds could always be found down at Lichuan (Willow River) Canal where couples strolled, children fed the fish and sketchers could often be seen capturing its beauty.
Taichung had so many temples, with small ones often tucked away cheek by jowl with businesses and dwellings. I wanted to include the scooters in this sketch too because one of the first things you notice in Taiwan is their numbers. There are around 15 million registered, which is about one for every adult – the highest scooter density in the world!
Nearby Lukang is a fascinating old town where a sketcher could be busy for days. Its Longshan Temple is Taiwan’s most well-preserved Fujianese style architecture from the Qing dynasty with a very classic look and serene feel about it, and it was particularly beautiful to sketch in the late afternoon light.
A common sight is street food vendors, especially in the night markets, with all manner of enticing goodies on offer. I had such a lovely time sketching this old lady making red bean cakes near our hotel. She came over regularly to check on my progress, and even though neither of us knew each other’s language, a smile goes such a long way!
A highlight of Taichung was our visit to Rainbow Village, an amazing display of street art, created in what was a veterans’ village that was being torn down by developers. The artist is 96 year old Huang Yung-Fu, or Rainbow Grandpa, who at the age of 88 began to paint the rundown houses in the emptying village with birds, animals, manga characters, dolls, etc in amazing patterns and vibrant colours. Once locals became aware of what he was achieving they protested, which caused the government to suspend demolition. Now a million people a year come to admire his artwork. We were told that he starts painting at 3am so that the paint is dry by the time visitors arrive for the day. Now that’s dedication! You can’t help but feel happy as you leave such a vibrant place!
That's just a small sample of what we saw and sketched but it's probably a good note to finish on, except to say a huge thank you to all those who gave so much of their own time and resources to make this wonderful event happen!
