A vivid autumn in Montreal

[Shari Blaukopf in Montreal, Canada] It's been an incredible autumn in Montreal. Bright and clear days and very vivid foliage colours have made it a pleasure to capture the changing season. I often sketch on my way to work and back, stopping for an hour before or after class to record the scene on a street near my school.

Rue Roy is one of those streets. It's lined with trees and overhanging branches, making it a favourite of mine in autumn. And there's always a place to park which is important for a car sketcher.

Last week the first frost caught all the hostas in my garden by surprise. One day they were green and the next day yellow, felled overnight by the dipping temperatures.

 

The park by the lake is also a beautiful spot to sketch even though the winds are sometimes fierce.

In Pointe Claire Village there's a spot where a curve in the road gives me a nice vantage point on the small shops and houses at the western end of the village. This is also one of my favourite spots to paint in winter, which I know is just around the corner.

Each time I sketch I notice another sign of the colder weather to come. Last week it was the appearance of driveway markers left by the snow clearing companies. Although the winter is endless in this city, it has become my favourite season for sketching and I eagerly await those first flakes. I likely will hardly sleep if I hear there's a first snowfall in the forecast, knowing I'll be able to paint a winter scene the next day.
