AsiaLink 2018, First Stop: Hong Kong

[Stephanie Bower, Seattle] Last month, I had the amazing opportunity to teach workshops at a wonderful USk symposium, AsiaLink in Taichung, Taiwan (more on that in a post coming up!) My first stop, however, was 4 GREAT days in Hong Kong.

Right off the bat, I have to thank the warm and generous Hong Kong Urban Sketchers...
the ridiculously talented Rob Sketcherman and his lovely missus Louisa who showed me their city and fed me too well, organizer extraordinaire and wonderful sketcher Alvin Wong, and all the talented HK sketchers I got to meet, eat, and sketch with (including Vanessa Leung--whose restaurant owning aunts are also Urban Sketchers-- and Ben Luk)!! THANK YOU!!

Hong Kong was amazing...shiny new clashing with the old (thankfully still found in the nooks and crannies), the tallest and skinniest and vertigo-inducing high rise towers I have ever seen, loads of people, all smashed together on a tiny island. So much to see, so much to sketch here.

I always show up early to adjust to the time change (+15 hours), to get the lay of the land, and to warm up! At home, I'm so busy with my day job, I don't make it out to sketch that often, so warm up is important.

I was also really determined to finally try INK...after years of carrying pens and never using them, I picked up my Carbon Platinum pen and found...I LOVE IT! In the future, I will have to figure out when to use my dear pencil and when to use the new pen. I am looking forward to figuring it out!

Above was my 3rd ink sketch in decades... the fabulous Central-Mid Levels escalators (really, moving sidewalks) that work their way in segments up the steep hill for many blocks. For commuters and tourists alike. And they switch directions in the morning. Great to slowly pass the shops and people below and above.

My brain was really challenged by this sketch...the buildings all use one vanishing point, but the street sloping up and the sidewalk use others...then there are the buildings that twist in the background. Crazy! But I love how this sketch came out, despite the headache it gave me!

Tall and skinny highrises stepping up the steep hill in
Lan Kwai Fong. This was the view from the
corridor in my hotel!
INK? Yep!! Ink sketch #4, sitting in a tiny street market in the center of town. These are great little markets, but Rob says HK wants to "clean up" these places...I sure hope they don't, as they add so much life and character to this city.  Eggs for sale on the right, fruit and veggies in the back.
HK street market.

And finally, the view from my lovely hotel room...and early morning peekaboo view of Kowloon across the bay. Kowloon sketches next!!!
