Corfu (2)
[by Javier de Blas in Corfu, Greece] After two days in Corfu Town, we visited theMount Athos in 2011 (there he was called Serafim), in a 4-month journey along the northern coast of the Mediterranean, which I shared in my blog Desde la Bañera
Triviño returns to Corfu Town and Arsenios takes me to a couple of villages at the top of the mountain, Zygos and Sokraki, where he serves as parish priest. The mass in Zygos lasts three hours, which is usual I guess. But I feel free to draw the people who attend.
From Sokraki you can see Corfu Town and the sea. Beautiful, but I settle for making a note of the local bar where we end up having the aperitif. Then we return to Zygos, where parishioners friends of Arsenios, invite us for lunch. Waoo! They have prepared paella as first dish! My heart melts. Then the always abundant and delicious local dishes. Pleased, I portrait Vasilious, son of our hosts at lunch, who often goes to help the abbot. I also return to portray Arsenios. He is a great person, with an enormous capacity for work. In five years he has recovered much of the monastery, which he assumed in ruins when he returned from Mount Athos, where he lived for more than thirty years.
