Big red guy sparks media rukus

The big jovial red guy caused a huge hooha in New Zealand this year leaving Kiwis feeling pretty jaded.

First there was a funding drama over the enormous Santa that appears on the Farmers building every year. The department store announced they could no longer afford him and this sent our media into a complete spasm.

The threat of a Christmas with no Santa towering over our busiest street was just too much! Eventually a building developer stepped in to help with funding and Christmas crisis was averted — at least that's what we thought.

Until Auckland Council threatened to drop funding for the annual Christmas parade in favour of the Pride Parade and Diwali festival. As you can imagine this created yet more media fuss and talkback radio fodder.

This quickly faded though as news leaked that the parade Santa had been fired! Evidently Santa had made sexist comments regarding the dim prospect of a female Santa ever headlining the parade some day.

Meanwhile down country in Nelson, their annual Christmas Parade made headline news when a slim Māori Santa appeared at the reins of the sleigh, he was draped in a red korowai rather than a red cape! This set talkback radio and television reporters into a frenzy! For or against, the debate raged on for weeks.

The debate is still bumbling on with calls to reinstate the above Santa's winking eye and come hither finger action – features that were removed years ago as they were deemed to be 'creepy'.

My last attempt to draw this Santa was way back in 2010 and like the all the drama around Santa each year, I'll probably be back to draw him again too. He's just too big, red and spectacular to ignore.
