[By James Hobbs in London] “Another dramatic day in British politics”: how often we’ve heard that said since the 2016 referendum decision to take the UK out of the European Union. Political drama is so commonplace here, it is now the new normal. On Wednesday, for instance, a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Theresa May was announced by her party colleagues before breakfast time. By supper time, she had won that vote. Whether that is good news or bad news depends upon who you are listening to. Consensus is out of the window. Just about everything is split 50/50. Only division unites us. Nobody seems to know where the country is heading, apart from out of the EU in little more than 100 days’ time.

College Green, a patch of lawn opposite the Houses of Parliament with a sculpture by Henry Moore in the middle of it, becomes the scene of a media scrum on such occasions. The big names of UK news and politics crowd into and swarm around a tented village of temporary studios. Flag-waving demonstrators take positions that mean they can be seen in the background of TV news reports. It’s a buzzing place of discussion, passion, humour and excitement at unfolding news. Westminster Abbey looms behind it, suggesting centuries of historical continuity, even if at this point we can’t see beyond 29 March 2019.
