I'm having a hull of a time

Sketching in the Grey Book has been interesting. There have been some serious fails, (no, I'm not going to show you any of those) and some really exciting results too. I'm well into my second book now, and I'm having a hull of a time drawing yachts in it – tacky pun I know but I had to use it.

It's easy to describe the hull form, masts and sometimes features like self-furling sails in white without drawing any lines at all. In fact I start the sketch by putting down basic white shapes. This is a totally unnatural approach for me – I'm usually all about the lines.

The top sketch (Ahuriri, Napier) bought back a lot of memories for me, the yacht to the left and the one to the right are both H28s, a classic design and I sailed on one of these a lot as a kid in Tauranga.



This is Sunset above, sketched at from under Pohutukawa trees is Devonport as a commission for the owner who is thinking of selling her. Below are various racers on the hard at Westhaven marina. I really like enjoyed capturing their sleek shapes.
