Trump unveils new slogan for border wall
President Trump on Wednesday unveiled a new slogan for the border wall as he presses Democrats to agree to funding for the project amid the government shutdown standoff.
“BUILD A WALL & CRIME WILL FALL! This is the new theme, for two years until the Wall is finished (under construction now), of the Republican Party. Use it and pray!” Trump tweeted Wednesday morning.
BUILD A WALL & CRIME WILL FALL! This is the new theme, for two years until the Wall is finished (under construction now), of the Republican Party. Use it and pray!
Again, two minutes later, the president tweeted: “BUILD A WALL & CRIME WILL FALL!”
The slogan would seemingly replace the old, “BUILD THAT WALL” that so many Trump supporters have chanted at rallies across the country since he announced his intention to run for president in 2015.
The president’s tweets come amid a 33-day partial government shutdown -- which began after a political impasse over Trump's call for border-barrier funding. Democrats have vowed to block any spending package that includes funding for the wall, while Trump has insisted on it.
Over the weekend, the president announced a potential compromise package. Trump said he was prepared to back a three-year extension of protections for 700,000 immigrants who came to the country illegally as children and were shielded from deportation under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This, in exchange for his requested $5.7 billion for a barrier on the southern border
The deal Trump presented also would extend protections for 300,000 recipients of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program—which protects immigrants from designated countries with conditions that prevent nationals from returning safely. The plan would allocate $800 million for drug detection technology to secure the ports of entry, 2,750 new border agents and law enforcement professionals, and 75 new immigration judges to reduce a backlog of asylum requests.
IN SHUTDOWN FIGHT WITH TRUMP, DEMS REJECT IMMIGRATION DEAL THEY ONCE SPONSORED
But Democrats, who once said those protections were urgently needed, are largely opposing the plan as the Senate prepares to vote on two funding packages later this week.
The shutdown has left more than 800,000 federal workers and contractors without pay. Some have been deemed essential to government function and are expected to work without pay, while others have been furloughed, and also are receiving no paychecks.

8 Shocking Facts About New York’s Radical Abortion Law

The New York State legislature has put in place one of the most radical abortion laws in the United States following a vote in both chambers on Tuesday.
The law is meant to put forth the “fundamental right” to abortion and end protections from babies in the womb up to birth.
The state Senate voted 38-24 in favor of the so-called “Reproductive Health Act” Tuesday evening, the Albany Times-Union reports, a bill that has repeatedly cleared the state Assembly in years past but been blocked by the formerly-Republican Senate. Following the Senate vote, the Assembly passed it 92-47.
“We have a president who’s made it very, very clear that he wants to overturn Roe v. Wade,” Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins declared before the vote. “Today, here in New York, we are saying no […] and we’re not just saying no. We’re saying that here in New York, women’s health matters. We’re saying here in New York, women’s lives matter. We’re saying here in New York, women’s decisions matter.”
Here are eight facts about New York’s new abortion law:
– The “fundamental” right to abortion is enshrined in the New York Constitution. “Every individual who becomes pregnant has the fundamental right to choose to carry the pregnancy to term, to give birth to a child, or to have an abortion, pursuant to this article,” the law states.
– The law allows non-physicians to perform abortions. “A health care practitioner licensed, certified, or authorized under title eight of the education law, acting in his or her lawful scope of practice, may perform an abortion,” the law states.
– The law allows abortion through the third trimester, including up to birth. “Third-trimester abortion will be allowed under the new law when a preborn child is diagnosed with a condition that will cause him or her to die at or shortly after birth,” Live Action reported.
– The law removes protections for babies who survive an abortion procedure. “The new law removes protections for babies born alive after an abortion — meaning they could be left to die after birth — by rescinding a portion of New York’s public health law,” Live Action reported. Late-term abortions, until now, were illegal in the state of New York.
– The law prevents pregnant women whose babies are killed in an attack on the mother from seeking justice and could result in infanticide by repealing the requirement for a second physician to be on hand in case an attempted abortion past 20 weeks yields a live infant.
– The law states that an unborn child cannot be a victim of homicide if he dies while in the womb following an attack on the mother. “‘Person,’ when referring to the victim of a homicide, means a human being who has been born and is alive,” the law states.
– Pro-abortion advocates said the law would protect legal abortion even in the event that the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision to make abortion legal — a decision that did no go as far as the New York law. “[The law] not only increases access to abortion across the board, including late-term abortions but also goes beyond Roe, which left some limits in place,” Catholic News Service reported.
– The law is to “prevent the enforcement of laws or regulations that are not in furtherance of a legitimate state interest in protecting a woman’s health that burden abortion access.”

CATHOLICS DEMAND GOVERNOR CUOMO’S EXCOMMUNICATION OVER NY ABORTION LAW
Joshua Gill | Religion Reporter
Catholic lay leaders demanded that Cardinal Timothy Dolan excommunicate New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for signing legislation that codified abortion as a woman’s right.
The lay leaders made their demand in response to an open letter in which New York’s Catholic bishops decried the new law, called the Reproductive Health Act, rejecting Cuomo’s claim that the law is “progress.” Prominent Catholic laymen like author John Zmirak and editor of First Things magazine Matthew Schmitz argued the letter didn’t go far enough and that Cuomo should be denied Holy Communion. “This is not progress. Progress will be achieved when our laws and our culture once again value and respect each unrepeatable gift of human life, from the first moment of creation to natural death,” the bishops’ letter said, according to Life Site News.
If we Catholics really believe what we say when we talk about heaven, hell, and the dignity of the unborn, @CardinalDolan should, after exhausting all other means of correction, excommunicate @andrewcuomo.https://twitter.com/NYGovCuomo/status/1087885705714589696 …

A chorus of agreement with Schmitz arose from other prominent Catholics on Twitter, including journalists, academics, and activists, in light of Cuomo’s history of overt support for expanding abortion access.
@CardinalDolan needs to excommunicate these murderous Catholics in accord with Scripture and the current Canon law. Will he?:

Hi, @CardinalDolan. The governor of your state is an alleged Catholic. He just legalized the murder of fully developed infants. Are you going to excommunicate him, as is your obligation, or are you concerned with making sure you still get invitations to the cocktail parties?

I agree wholeheartedly. Now is the time for our shepherds to be bold in the faith.

Gov.@Cuomo has, I understand, refrained from Communion since the concubinage controversy of 2011; now, his blatant promotion of New York’s murderous abortion law would, by itself, suffice to conclude he must not be admitted to the Sacrament per Canon 915. http://www.canonlaw.info/canonlaw915.htm
If Andrew Cuomo remains a "Catholic in good standing" after signing this abortion bill then the Church's institutional witness to life simply has zero teeth and the US bishops have completely abdicated their responsibilities as shepherd of souls. No other way to square it, folks.
The law expands New York women’s access to abortion up to the point of fetal viability — a point that is vaguely defined and contested among medical experts. The law also stipulates that women may abort babies after 24 weeks of development in cases where “there is an absence of fetal viability, or at any time when necessary to protect a patient’s life or health.”
“We mourn the unborn infants who will lose their lives, and the many mothers and fathers who will suffer remorse and heartbreak as a result,” the bishops’ letter added.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) said "there are two co-equal branches of government" during an appearance on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360" Tuesday.
Warren, who is running to be the Democratic nominee for president, neglected to mention the judicial branch while responding to a question from host Anderson Cooper. She also referred to the executive and legislative branches as "the president" and "the Congress."
"Do you ever think, look, the realistic endgame is that Republicans get two-thirds of what they want and Democrats have to settle for the shorter straw? Is that how the balance of power works?" Cooper asked.
"Well, let's talk about the balance of power. There are two co-equal branches of government, the president of the United States and the Congress," Warren said as she began her response.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) doesn't know how many branches of government exist: "There are two co-equal branches of government, the president of the United States and the Congress"

Warren announced she was forming a presidential exploratory committee in December. Politico reported last week that she was placing top Democratic talent on her campaign. Earlier in the month, it was reported that Warren's Iowa campaign staff consists of several staffers with "deep" experience in the state's caucus.
The Democratic field has grown more crowded in the weeks since Warren announced the formation of an exploratory committee. On Wednesday, Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, announced he would seek the Democratic nomination. Former Obama administration official Julian Castro, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D., Hawaii), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D., N.Y.), and Sen. Kamala Harris (D., Calif.) are also running.
Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) could also enter the race, along with several other Democrats.
