Istanbul in pencil
[By Harshad Arole in Istanbul]
The Spice Bazaar at Istanbul was my first sighting of the innumerable domes that I would be seeing over the three days that I was going to be in this city. Crammed in my itinerary were many places to visit and I sensed that I wasn't going to have enough time for the watercolour sketches that I usually do.
So, I tried a different approach and sketched this scene at the Spice Bazaar with a normal HB graphite pencil while composing the massive structures as wide scenes on a double page layout in my sketchbook. This turned out to be quick and enjoyable and I ended up doing a series of these in Istanbul

Topkapi Palace - First Gate |
The Topkapi Palace was the main location which the Ottoman Sultans used for residence and administrative purposes. Sketched here are the main buildings and first gate of the of the sprawling palace which is now a museum.
The awesome Hagia Sofia (AyaSofya) was captured in this sketch while standing in the courtyard of the Blue Mosque which is another gem of a building with its distinctive six minarets. Most of the mosques in Istanbul are undergoing some sort of restoration work but the sheer size and form of the buildings is fascinating enough for an urban sketcher.

Dolmabahce Palace - Main Gate |
The Dolmabahce Palace has a different kind of architecture (Baroque) than the usual domes and medieval Ottoman influence in Istanbul. The Sultans moved to this palace in the last century before the Caliphate ended. I spent an afternoon inside the palace which still maintains all its grandeur. Sketching, was however restricted to the exteriors. I sketched the main gate to the palace and another one which our guide informed was the gate that separated the Harem from the main Palace.

Rice Puddings at Hafiz Mustafa (estd. 1864) |
The last one from my graphite pencil series of urban sketches in Istanbul was a street somewhere behind the Spice Bazaar. The cluster of buildings in the sketch housed couple of government offices, a hotel, some restaurants and cafes, some shops and even a school.
I couldn't leave this amazing city without a watercolour sketch and so there I was, early morning on a Sunday capturing the splendour of the two grand mosques of Istanbul.
