Oink Oink – Year of the Pig, Sydney Style

[By Chris Haldane in Sydney]
Lunar New Year Festival is going from strength to strength in our fair city, being one of the biggest celebrations of its kind outside of Asia, involving our Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Korean and other communities, with 80 events across arts, culture, food and sport.

My first visit to this year’s events was to see the three (not so) little pigs installation at World Square. In China, the pig is known for having a happy character and a sense of humour, and these three had so much personality that I couldn’t help but draw them! There was also a dancing pig installation where you could watch yourself dance along with them. The petting zoo with real piglets seemed somewhat tame in comparison with these larger than life porcine characters! Young and old alike mimicked their poses and took selfies. I was intrigued by what looked like some heavy duty veterinary procedure taking place on the pigs’ rear ends (after twisting off their tails!), until I realised the man was an electrician trying to get the lights working in the fans the pigs were carrying!!

LNY certainly brought the crowds down to Circular Quay, where the Opera House’s white sails glowed red to join in the celebration – a tourist’s dream! Giant lunar lanterns of animals from the Chinese zodiac like a dog, a huge stately tiger, fighting roosters, rabbits practising tai chi, and a monster sized snake hanging from the roof of the Cruise Terminal, were spread along  the walkway from the Opera House right round to The Rocks. They were lit from dusk, creating a festive atmosphere. Beside the Opera House a lantern built on a 3D grid formed an abstract silhouette of a pig.

And on the final weekend of LNY at Darling Harbour two huge blow-up pigs were the embodiment of the saying “Pigs might fly’ when their wings lifted each time the wind blew, as if they were getting ready to take off for the heavens!

On Sunday a quieter LNY celebration (except for when the drummers walked through with the dragon dancers!) took place in the Chinese Garden of Friendship. Visitors wrote their hopes and dreams on red bookmarks that fluttered in the breeze, red lanterns hung everywhere and activities ran all day long amidst the gardens and their beautiful trees. But now it’s over and we wait for what’s in store for next year!
