Dem Who Grilled Whitaker on Gambling Backed by Lobbyists Tied to Internet Gambling

Raskin took more than $38,000 from individuals associated with Hogan Lovells and Skaden Arps

Democratic representative Jamie Raskin (Md.), who last week suggested political impropriety was behind the Justice Department's opinion that internet gambling is illegal, has taken thousands of dollars from lobbyists representing online gaming interests.

During a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Friday, Raskin grilled acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker over his involvement in the DOJ's decision to reverse an Obama administration policy regarding the legality of online gambling. In his line of questioning, Raskin accused the Trump administration of giving into "the demands" of Sheldon Adelson, a GOP donor who has long opposed the expansion of online gaming.

"When Donald Trump won and Mr. Sessions became AG and you became chief of staff … the Office of Legal Counsel found some subtle and invisible points of law that apparently escaped the Department of Justice back in 2011, and it reversed the plain reading of the interpretation which talked specifically about sports betting," Raskin said. "Were you involved in that decision?"

Whitaker told the committee that he and then-attorney general Jeff Sessions were not involved, as they had opted to recuse themselves from the matter because of their relationship with Charles Cooper, a former lobbyist for the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling.

"Your inference that somehow that process was corrupted or corrupt is absolutely wrong and the premise of your question I reject," Whitaker said.  

At the time, Raskin's question struck observers as peculiar given that the 23 other Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee chose to press Whitaker over his relationship with President Donald Trump, the ongoing-Mueller investigation, and immigration policy. Raskin's financial disclosure reports, however, appear to shed some light on the heated back and forth.

Since entering Congress in 2017, individuals associated with the lobbying firms of Hogan Lovells and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP have ranked among Raskin's top 10 campaign contributors. Individuals from Hogan Lovells contributed more than $22,000 to Raskin's campaign between 2016 and 2018, while those from Skadden donated more than $15,000 to Raskin in the same time period.

Raskin was among the top recipients of campaign cash from individuals associated with Hogan Lovells during the 2016 campaign cycle—behind fellow Democrats Hillary Clinton and senators Chris Van Hollen (Md.), and Michael Bennet (Colo.).

In total, Raskin has accepted more than $38,000 from individuals with ties to the two firms, which count a bevy of national and international online gambling companies on their clientele roster.

Skadden Arps represents both domestic and foreign gambling companies like Ourgame International Holdings Ltd., Bally Technologies, Inc., and GigaMedia Limited, among others. Ourgame, a Chinese online card developer, and Bally Technologies, a Nevada-based manufacturer of slot machines, represent large portions of the online gambling space. Likewise, Hogan Lovells represents the European gaming companies Ladbrokes, Novomatic, and Paddy Power Betfair.

Both firms are retained by PokerStars, a website which controls two-thirds of the online poker market and is one the most profitable companies operating in the online gambling industry.

In 2011, PokerStars was one of the biggest beneficiaries of a legal opinion by the Obama-era DOJ that found the Federal Wire Act, which prohibits gambling over telecommunications systems that span state jurisdictions, only applied to sports betting. In effect, the opinion allowed individual states to legalize forms of online betting like internet poker—not involving sports. The decision was widely criticized from segments of the gambling industry, particularly the American Gaming Association, for failing to create uniform standards governing online gaming.

When the Trump administration took office in 2017, it undertook the process of reevaluating that decision. In November 2018, the DOJ ultimately found that no-sports betting was covered under the Wire Act and therefore illegal.

Despite the DOJ's new stance, most forms of online gambling were already prohibited by state and federal laws, including the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling and Enforcement Act. Currently Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware are the only states with laws that allow online casino gaming.

Raskin's office did not return requests for comment on this story.

Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has finally made the details of the “Green New Deal” public. The highlights include ending the use of fossil fuels by 2030, decommissioning every nuclear power plant in the next ten years, ending air travel, mandating all new jobs be unionized, rebuilding “every building in US for state-of-the-art energy efficiency” and blanket “economic security for all who are unable or unwilling to work.”

Now that the outline of the “Green New Deal” is available for public scrutiny, it is worthwhile to take a look at all of our lawmakers who have endorsed Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal. According to the Sunrise Movement – the outside organization advocating for the “Green New Deal” – 79 congressional lawmakers have agreed to cosponsor Ocasio-Cortez’s resolution for a Green New Deal.

Senator Ted Cruz says Mexican drug lord El Chapo should pay for the US border wall.

Republican Senator Ted Cruz says the United States must build a border wall, and Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman should pay for it.

Cruz first made the suggestion in April 2017, when El Chapo was awaiting trial. He doubled-down on it yesterday, shortly after Guzman was convicted on 10 drug conspiracy charges in a federal court in New York.

El Chapo’s Criminal Profits Top $14 Billion

Senator Cruz — an accomplished attorney who graduated from Harvard Law School — tweeted: “America’s justice system prevailed today in convicting Joaquín Guzmán Loera, aka El Chapo, on all 10 counts.

U.S. prosecutors are seeking $14 billion in drug profits and other assets from El Chapo, which should go towards funding our wall. Let’s pass the EL Chapo Act and make El Chapo pay to secure our border.”

The $14 billion the US is seeking in illicit drug profits from El Chapo’s criminal enterprise is more than double the $5.7 billion President Trump wants for the wall.

The one problem is that the US doesn’t have immediate access to those funds and officials don’t know for sure how much they will find.

David Gaddis, a former chief of enforcement operations at the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) said that “the hard facts that back up the government’s assertion of the $14 billion figure lay in the reporting of DEA files, but they will only be accessible when they are made available to Guzman’s defense as discovery material during pre-trial proceedings,” according to Forbes.com.

El Chapo is Guilty, Why Not Pass Ted Cruz’s Bill To Build The Wall With Cartel Cash?

(Mexico really can pay for the wall.)

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera, one of the most storied drug kingpins in history, was convicted on 10 federal charges Tuesday, including “engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, conspiracy to launder narcotics proceeds, international distribution of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and other drugs, and use of firearms.”

The criminal amassed a fortune of $14 billion during his decades running the brutal Sinaloa Cartels, which is responsible for unspeakable brutality. Now, the federal government seeks a forfeiture judgment of that cash, and just in the nick of time.

It is three times the amount requested by President Donald J. Trump to build a wall at the southern border, which would put a huge dent in the activities promulgated by those like El Chapo. Using his cash for a border wall would be apropos, and it wouldn’t cost the taxpayer a dime.

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas.) proposed in January that El Chapo’s fortune be used to build the wall.

“Ensuring the safety and security of Texans is one of my top priorities,” Cruz said while introducing the Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order Act (ELCHAPO). “We must also be mindful of the impact on the federal budget. By leveraging any criminally forfeited assets of El Chapo and his ilk, we can offset the wall’s cost and make meaningful progress toward achieving President Trump’s stated border security objectives.”

With Democrats in Congress dead set on deny Trump the wall, and Trump himself balking at the idea of declaring a national emergency to build the wall, Cruz’s plan might actually be the best option available. It completely levels the Democrats’ argument that a wall is fiscally irresponsible (not that Democrats actually care about fiscal responsibility) leaving them only with the “immorality” argument, which is flimsy at best.

Not to mention it forces them to choose between siding with a notorious drug lord and the security of United States.

El Chapo faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison. He will appeal his conviction, but will likely never see the light of day again. He has no use for the money. We might as well do something positive with it.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Won’t Say Whether Pelosi Should Be Required to Release Her Tax Returns

(CNSNews.com) -- Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) would not say whether she thinks House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) should be legally required to release her tax returns, even though Pelosi and House Democrats want to legally force President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence to release theirs.

On Tuesday, CNSNews.com asked Ocasio-Cortez: “In H.R. 1, it would legally require the president and vice president to release their tax returns. Do you think the Speaker of the House should also be required to release his or her tax returns?”

Ocasio-Cortez responded: “You know – you know, I – well, first of all, president and vice president is an elected position by the American people. I generally tend towards more transparency. There is a difference, although, because the speaker’s elections happen after a general election. So that – that time is much shorter, but – but, yeah.”

According to Ocasio-Cortez’ communications director, Corbin Trent, the word “yeah” at the end of Ocasio-Cortez’ statement was not an affirmative answer to the question, but a filler word.

CNSNews.com then repeatedly called and emailed Ocasio-Cortez’ press office with the question, “H.R. 1 would legally require the president and vice president to release their tax returns. Does Rep. Ocasio-Cortez think House Speaker Pelosi should also be required to release her tax returns? Yes or no?”

This morning, CNSNews.com emailed Ocasio-Cortez' communications director, Corbin Trent, presenting the question again, offering Ocasio-Cortez another opportunity to directly answer it, and explaining that we otherwise planned to publish a story saying she would not answer the question. Trent responded, "Sounds good."

H.R. 1, known as the “For the People Act of 2019,” was introduced by Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) on Jan. 3, the first day of the 116th Congress. The act seeks to increase transparency in government, and would require the sitting U.S. president and vice president, but not members of Congress, to make their tax returns public.

Section 10001 of the act, entitled Presidential and Vice Presidential Tax Transparency, states that the sitting president and vice president must submit copies of their income tax returns “for the taxable year and for the 9 preceding taxable years” to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), and the FEC must make the returns “publicly available.”

In addition, the act would require presidential and vice presidential candidates from a “major party” to submit copies of their income tax returns for the “10 most recent taxable years.”

Members of Congress, including Pelosi, would not be required to disclose their tax returns under H.R. 1.

The Speaker of the House is third in line to the presidency.
