USk Workshop: Elegance in Watercolor

This is an investment workshop – we will invest in our art and get the best return on investment by employing just enough shapes, colors and strokes. This is Uma’s definition of elegance and we will study how to use just enough design elements to make watercolors sing. Exercises during two days will build up towards a quarter sheet or larger painting on day 3. We will focus on the technical skills at the beginning followed by discussion of elements of design and Uma’s philosophy of painting. We will also do a few verbal exercises and exercises that help us ‘look’ or develop the artist’s eye. If you’ve always wanted to overcome the fear of wet in wet painting, rest assured that at end of the workshop, you will feel more confident about approaching it independently. The workshop promises to be full of rigorous exercises and exhaustive mental challenges which will leave you spent but stronger – like a weight training class should leave you! The group dynamic is a wonderful opportunity to experience different perspectives within wet-in-wet style of painting. There will be 1-1 discussions at least twice a day and a critique at end of day two and three.

Learning goals

a) Overcome fear of wet-in-wet painting in watercolour
b) Reduce clutter of a scene to few shapes
c) Increase stamina to observe before putting brush to paper

Workshop location

Delft, Netherlands
We will be close to city center. However, exact coordinates will be sent 2 weeks before workshop begins.

Dates

Wednesday July 17 – Friday July 19

Duration

3 consecutive days, 9am - 4pm with lunch break in between.

Workshop Schedule
Day 1 is about gaining technical skills. Technical skills that are covered are:
a) making skillful washes (these are not easy as one thinks),
b) then dividing scene down to basic areas and then doing these paintings in washes only (wet-in-wet).

Day 2 is about learning to see and to divide a scene down and to be able to verbalize it.
a) This group exercise allows everyone to see how one scene can be treated differently as we go about talking around the block and dividing each scene and making pencil sketches.
b) We have a long paint out this afternoon. We paint quarter sheet, using technical skills of Day 1 and using the best thumbnail from the morning.

Day 3 is custom day. Usually, Day 1 is a high, Day 2 is a low and Day 3 is about addressing the problems each one of the students had on Day 2 and having one more go at it with a plan. The most common problem to be addressed, in my experience is that, when students paint on big paper, their fear of wet-in-wet re-appears. However, having a plan for each one, reinstates a confidence that allows them to try a new method with renewed energy.
