My first approach to greenhouses in the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, was not really centered on this subject. In fact what interested me was the sculpture "Vertebrata" by Quentin Garel which features a vertebra of whale. Beautiful material and rust color that play in the light and with the windows of the greenhouse and vegetation in background. It is this game of opaque / transparent relationship and colorful contrasts that I searched in this watercolor.

A few weeks later, it is always the game of transparencies that interested me when I settled in front of the exit of the tropical greenhouse. Purplish pink highlights give vigor to the foreground greens. I play with an expanded range of green from orange yellow to brown. It helps to make the contrasts sing. I also work a lot with the reserve, especially leaving a lot of unpainted parts, they shape the space as much as the masses and the painted lines.

Now, it is cold, so impossible to paint outside. Inside the tropical greenhouse, it is (very) hot and humid. I choose the cave, the water flows in torrent in an incessant noise. It's really weird, I feel like I'm gone on a trip. I literally dive into the greens of all kinds, the patterns and cut-outs of the leaves, I try to find values ​​despite the pale light. There is so much vegetation that you can hardly see the architecture of the greenhouse.
I'm choking, it's too hot... I need to change my sketch location.

Inside the greenhouse of New Caledonia, I start a bigger drawing, I want to keep a lot of white, not to fill everything. I like the relationship between the foliage design and the geometry of the black lines of the bay windows. I paint a large shape of vegetation that crosses the composition in a dynamic movement. I play with soft greens and purple shadows. Suddenly, I hear a whistle: the greenhouses close... I let myself be surprised, I hurry to put the last touches of color to capture this end of the day in New Caledonia...
