USk Workshop: Using Graphic Novel Techniques in Urban Sketching
Join Caroline Parkinson at Coventry Central Library for a relaxed, fun day of exploring graphic novel techniques to convey your unique take on a scene!
This one-day introduction to sequential art techniques teaches you how to add meaning to your urban sketching work using a variety of storytelling exercises inspired by comic luminaries such as Will Eisner and Scott McCloud
In this workshop you’ll learn to use composition and framing effectively, build up a sense of place using multiple images, and develop those images into a simple narrative.
The workshop starts with a short demo and introduction to techniques, including:
· Using panels
· Framing a sketch
· Drawing movement
· Establishing a sense of place using multiple images
· How to introduce handwritten text into your artwork
Students then head out into the city centre and use these techniques to establish an urban environment using a pre prepared comic layout. If the weather’s bad, or if you’d prefer to draw inside, students are free to stay within the library. This will be followed by a regroup, a mini-critique and a break for lunch (1 hour).
In the afternoon we introduce text, and create your own panel layout, repeating the morning’s exercise to tell a simple story,
Students will receive a hand out at the end of the session with a guide on techniques and a recommended reading list. Students will be invited to email scans or photographs of their work to compile into an e-zine distributed to all participants.
