[By James Hobbs in London] Yesterday was Earth Day, and the Extinction Rebellion camp of environmental campaigners spilt out around the Marble Arch roundabout, currently closed to traffic. Even the weather – it was the hottest Easter Monday in the UK since records began – reinforced the sense of urgency that now, more than ever, before it is too late, is the time for urgent action on climate change based on scientific fact rather than ill-informed discussion trying to sweep things under the carpet. The non-violent civil disobedience created by the campaign, which has already been moved on from Waterloo Bridge and Oxford Circus, is planned to continue until next week. As with the anti-Brexit march a few weeks ago, the atmosphere is relaxed, family friendly and good natured. Although arrests in the past week number more than 1,000, the police at Marble Arch chat with the crowds and play with the children. The spirit of David Attenborough hangs in the air.

Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish environmentalist, is even in town. My younger daughter has been joining the regular Friday school strikes in central London that were inspired by Thunberg and have now spread around the globe. World leaders wedded to old ways may refuse to engage with climate change as an urgent problem, but there is a sense that something is in motion now that cannot be stopped, and must not be stopped.
