Dance of the Cranes at Barangaroo

[By Chris Haldane in Sydney]
It’s hard to imagine that the Sydney Opera House could ever play second fiddle to any other building in Sydney. But that’s the claim being made about Barangaroo, a $6 billion development that’s transforming what was a container wharf into a trendy centre of shops, restaurants, offices and apartments. It's claimed that when construction is finished, it will attract twice as many visitors as the Opera House.

The most eye-catching part of Barangaroo is likely to be the most expensive single building in Australia: Crown Casino, otherwise known as Crown Sydney, which is currently under construction and will also house a 350 room hotel (Sydney's first 6 start hotel) and 82 apartments.

Being an avid crane lover, in its early days of construction I couldn’t resist sketching it from various vantage points. I always love those red swinging cranes from The Men from Marrs! They make such a statement against the skyline.

Crown Sydney will provide spectacular views of Sydney, especially of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, an enticement for wealthy gamblers to stay overnight! If you’re thinking of spending a night there when you visit Sydney next, you might need to think again …  hotel rooms are expected to cost around $40,000 a night, but just imagine sketching those views!! Or perhaps you’d like to buy the penthouse: it’s expected to sell for AUD $100,000,000. If that doesn’t suit your budget, how about the Crown Residences, probably starting at around $9.5 million for two bedrooms?

The designers say the site demanded something sculptural:  three petals that twist as they rise up independently. We’ve been promised ‘one of the most beautiful buildings you’ve ever seen’.  I guess when it’s completed in 2021 we’ll be able to judge that for ourselves!
