Favorite locations in Dubai
[Guest post by Soroshi Michelle in Dubai ] When I first moved to Dubai, what struck me most about the city was its cleanliness. Everything is immaculate and polished like it was brand new. There are shiny glass buildings, super cars and the crazy summer heat (over 50 degrees Celsius sometimes!) The city has developed rapidly over the last two decades. There is frequent news of an upcoming project and as soon as you learn more about it, construction is probably finished with a date set for the inauguration!
But this is only part of the story. For me, the most wonderful part of living here is the diversity. 83% of the city is expatriate population. It's amazing to be surrounded by people who have all arrived from different countries with stories to share. Here is a glimpse into my sketchbook during my last three years in the city.
Lime Tree Cafe (above) has exposed AC ducting with firefighting systems visible up above. I love the industrial feel and open ceiling in this cafe.
At Madinat Jumeirah, the ambience is of a modern souk (marketplace) with traditional architectural features built with contemporary techniques.
I have been enjoying sketching in a graphic novel style. It helps me break the monotony of my sketchbook with smaller frames. It was a delightful experience drawing Counter Culture Cafe. There was a live cooking counter, a view overlooking the street and a bar counter tucked away at the end.
Restaurants and cafes are without doubt the most comforting places to sit and draw at in a hot climate. This was my first attempt at drawing in a bar. This is Nippon Bottle Co. Since I avoid sketching people, I was lucky on that day because it was at a time when they hadn't opened for service!
The hotel Atlantis, Palm Jumeirah is known for its scenic location at the tip of the Palm and its design with a large arch in the centre. I have captured only one side of the arch here since I spent much time looking for a suitable view and finally settled on a spot next to a window in the lobby.

One of my most recent location drawings was at Le Pain Quotidien in Marina Mall where I attempted a mirrored layout to draw over a double page spread with black ink on one side and red on the other. I have shared many memories with friends at this cafe and it almost feels like home.
It feels quite satisfying reaching the end of a sketchbook especially when there's a fresh one waiting for my pen to start its work. Not to mention, the sense of fulfillment in flipping through the completed books and reliving the memories of the sketched locations!
