The Persuasive Powers of the Sketchbook: 2017 Symposium Lectures
For the Friday evening events, participants had the option of attending a concert performance at the Pritzker Pavilion with reserved lawn seats, or they could attend the continuing lecture series at the Goodman Center. For those who, like yours truly, chose the lectures, two very important presenters took the stage and each presented on some very important topics to urban sketchers. The first was noted urban sketcher who has turned her on-location attention to several resistance demonstrations and political protests. Audience members were mesmerized by her process and her choice of art kit used to record in such volatile circumstances. Questions ranged from how to get started, how to learn about the various rallies and demonstrations and, of course, how to stay safe. My notes are contained within the above illustration known as a SpeakerSketch™ which I often employ with my urban sketching during my day job.
Presenter Rita Sabler
My favorite tips from Hugo's presentation:
1. When you have trouble language, grab a BIC pen and sketch.
Sketching is a great way to communicate.
2. Sketch anywhere, anytime for any reason at all. He once sketched at a stoplight
on his Vespa.
Presenter Hugo Costa
