Tradition and modernity around Japan

[Guest post by Yi Bin Liang in Japan.] Last year, I traveled to Japan on a school trip, where one of the assignments was to keep a sketchbook/notebook recording details of our experiences. We started out in Tokyo, exploring the city's modern architecture and attending a Noh theater performance.

About half of our trip took place in Tokushima, learning traditional papermaking at the Awagami Paper Factory.

We spent a few days on Mount Koya, staying at a temple and exploring Okunoin, a large cemetery within which is the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism in Japan. The paths were lined with huge, ancient trees and tiny statues of Jizo Bosatsu, the patron of dead children.

The Daibutsu

We visited the Todaiji Temple in Nara, known for its Daibutsu, the world's largest bronze Buddha. (The top image shows the Great Buddha Hall.)

The trip ended with a week in Kyoto, trying to see as many shrines and temples as possible before we had to leave. Probably my favorite museum in Japan, the Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts, showcases the history, tools and products of trades like carpentry, weaving and dyeing.
