[by Cathy Gatland in Johannesburg, South Africa] Sketched over five hours spent renewing my drivers licence at the Randburg licence centre last week... It was my fourth trip there, having been told the previous times that I was too late; they had the quota of 200 people they could process in a day lined up and wouldn't take any more. This time I made sure I got there really early (while still avoiding the crazy morning traffic) and was accepted into the queue.

 8:45 Relieved not to be turned away yet again, no.146 was scribbled on my application form and I resigned myself to a long wait outside the magical doorway to legal driving.

 9:30 Inside the building at last, peering out of the window to sketch the people outside.

  10:15 We'd shuffled a few more feet in, and round the corner...the lucky ones grabbed a seat on the windowsill for half an hour or so.

 10:45 Behind the reception desk. Successful applicants trying to leave were locked in while a cash-in-transit vehicle collected yesterdays takings. I watched with sympathy as a few hopefuls came to the desk wanting to join the queue - and vowed never to create a raging scene there in future as some did at being turned away...quite an entertainment for the bored watchers in the dingy background.

  11:00 Shuffle, shuffle, shuffle, I came to another halt at the bottom of the flight of stairs

 11:30 and halfway up

 11:45 looking down, and...

12:30 Sitting down at last with the final stage - the queue for the Cashiers - tantalisingly in sight. Then into the room where the eye-tests, fingerprints, biometrics etc were done. I was too busy making sure all my documents were in order and I didn't miss my call, to sketch any further. By 1:45 I was out, blinking triumphantly in the sunshine five hours later, good for another five years before I'll have to do it all over again.
