Le Havre transformed by art and artists!

After my experience painting huge sculptures in Chicago, I wanted to continue to capture this kind of artwork. So I decided to discover a city in the North West of France, on the English Channel: Le Havre. Much of Le Havre was destroyed during the Second World War, and the city was reconstructed by the famous French architect Auguste Perret from 1945 to 1964. The city center was declared a UNESCO World Heritage of Humanity site in 2005.
For three days, I walked along the four trails created by the curator Jean Blaise: for the event “Un été au Havre” (a Summer in The Havre), he has invited artists, designers, musicians to create artworks to highlight the spirit of the city.
In the watercolor above, you can discover an installation called “Colors on the beach”: Karel Martens has added color strips to the beach cabins. A team of scientists from the Normandie University generated a code defining the ten shades and six widths of the color strips adorning the cabins. Each cabin becomes unique. It was funny to play with these intense colors and understand how they are transformed by light and shade. The sky was so beautiful that day and so hard to paint!
I like the relationship between the “UP#3” from Lang and Bauman and “Accumulation of power” from Chiharu Shiota. On the left, the huge sculpture creates a square frame to discover the sea. The whiteness of the structure changes according to the colors of the sky.
On the right, I wanted to capture the lightness of the red whirlpool construction. For me, the big rings and
the hundreds of red threads are in movement, like a flight to the bell tower of the church in which it is installed. The light through the stained glass changes the color of the artwork as the hours go by.
Le Havre is a busy trade port: Vincent Ganivet has built two monumental arches with 36 assembled containers. “Catène de containers” (Catenary of containers) is a nod to the city’s port activity containers. When I discovered the white arch on the bridge (on the right), I remember the colored sculpture. These two structures are very difficult to paint without a preliminary drawing because you have to anticipate curves, non-painting parts, shades, buildings background, etc.
Colors, structures, curves, stripes have transformed the city of Le Havre during the Summer. I think art is a good way to (re)discover a place!
