National days in Kharkiv

[Guest post by Jaro Jakovlev in Kharkiv, Ukraine] The last week of August, our city was celebrating its National days. The 23rd here is the day of the city, when we usually have concerts on plazas, called Maidans. Many people walk down the main streets, cleared of autos. Municipal authorities open some new or renovated public spaces, make meetings with invited foreign guests.

The 24th is Constitution Day, when they open monuments in honor of historic figures. It has more national colors – many more flags wherever your eyes may reach, you see guys and girls in embroidered costumes, you hear the songs about our country and other folk stuff.

The war has created special hues in recent years. You may see veterans and people wearing military clothes. They gather in small groups, with flowers and flags. For these couple of days our city becomes too clean to be true. As always, native citizens go out of the city borders towards nature, and suburbians flood over the streets. It looks like you are inside of continuous river of new faces, strolling on the electric gadgets, eating cookies and ice, drinking lemonade, swimming in the fountains and so on.

This August there were even more days-off, due to the end of the week that started right after Nationals. So for four days instead of two the bright colors (yellow and sky blue mainly) and vivid mood reigned over Kharkiv. Visiting downtown and outskirts, I was sketching everything, thanks to the weather – it was perfect. Here are more of those sketches:

The newly opened statue of Cossack leader Ivan Sirko, a famous, legendary, local.

Public open-air weekends on the quai with a floating stage (some weird idea goes into life). Street food festival and street musicians involved into the area.

As the true natives do, we left the city and went to the nature for a picnic. The bbq was awesome that evening. Yum!
