The Roofs Of Sampierdarena

[Guest Post by Greta Cencetti in Sampierdarena] I live in Sampierdarena, in the north west of Italy and I feel I truly belong to this place, its streets and its history. Often, with my sketchbook, I wander about to try to tell the story of Sampierdarena through sketching.

This is a city that develops upward, between the sea and the hills. The roofs up high are almost invisible. So I climbed up an old tower, looking for a different point of view of my beloved city. And here you have them, The Roofs of Sampierdarena (The name of the city means Saint Peter on the Sand).

My city is located west of Genoa. Until 1926, when the powerful Great Genoa annexed it, it was a independent city, with its history, its peculiarities, and its pride. Integrated by force into Genoa, it has preserved an identity completely its own.

From the 1500s onwards, the villas of the most powerful families of the Genoese nobility were here. Some of these villas still remain, their interiors and exteriors often intact.

Even some gardens remain. I sketched these roofs from the tower of the Friendly Society Universale Mazzini, founded in 1851, a place known not only for its height, but also for its historical symbolism.

Climbing on the tower, armed with my usual soft pencils, I also sketched the Teatro Modena, a neoclassical jewel still in business.

I discovered many old railings, rooftops with a flavor of Parisian bohème… From there, the perception of the city's architecture, but above all, of the life that is the soul of my city is quite moving. Only one thing appeared at eye level, with discretion and beauty: the bell tower of the Church of the Cella, part of a small but sumptuous cloister. Here is the tiny and ancient pieve from which this whole city originates.

Greta Margot Cencetti is from Genoa, Italy. She is a painter and illustrator. She lives with a white rabbit called Oklahoma. Greta tries to tell the story of her country. See more of her work at http://ift.tt/2oLFqVa and at http://ift.tt/2eIrT0Q
