Meet the correspondent: Harshad Arole > Pune, India

I am neither trained as an architect nor as an artist, which I believe reflects in my urban sketches.

I try to compose a view using a juxtaposition of various elements which characterise a particular location. The striking architectural facet of a building will always dominate but if it is complemented by the people, vehicles, trees and small nondescript structures around, the sketch captures the essence of the place and not just the structure.

My approach to drawing as a collection of features has also shaped the way I arrange the various items on a planar basis to establish the depth in sketches.

Jogeshwari

Colour fascinates me and plays a determining role in making my sketches look vibrant and charming. I create shapes of colours mixed directly on the paper and work my sketch and the finer details over it with a fountain pen or a fine marker.

When I returned to Pune after 15 years, I was excited to get absorbed in the cultural blend of the city with its old wadas, plethora of temples, the British architecture, the labyrinth of alleys in the Peth areas and the urbanization driven by the information technology wave. While I had spent my childhood in Pune, I could not feel anything but sheer joy of stumbling across spots that I never knew existed.

Urban sketching is all about drawing on location and capturing what we observe. In a way it increases our appreciation of the environment that we have created. It has not been long since I started urban sketching, but a look at any of my old sketches immediately evokes the recollections of the place, its feel, the atmosphere and the emotions which is a very happy satisfaction for me and can never be paralleled by any photographs.

Harshad Arole came via engineering, finance and a career in investment banking to be the computer games entrepreneur he is today. He finds joy in exploring and memorialising his hometown Pune with the city chapter of Urban Sketchers.
