Sketches at a big mall, IKEA Goyang

IKEA had opened its first branch in Gwangmyeong city near Seoul on Dec. 18, 2014 and its second one at Goyang city near Seoul too on Oct. 19 this year. Because I didn't go to the first branch for the distance. But the second one located at nearer from my house than the former one I visited there two times for sketching. Though we remember that the kids died from the fallen chest of drawers the inside of the big mall was full with people. 

It was interesting for the employees to provide yellow big shopping bags to be used for carrying goods in the mall. I saw the yellow bags hung on wall. Those were hung by shoppers while they were having meals in restaurant. 

At first visit I drew the street scenery from the restaurant. I felt some desolateness in broad way. 

Big lamps hung from ceiling looked nice.

People had to line up in long rows to order, receive dishes on cart, and pay and bring beverage. After those steps one should find a seat to have meal. But people seemed to do well. 

People tried to test sat on sofa. I could take some rest seated on comfortable chair while sketching this one too.

It was very attractive to see those standing shelves in rows. 

On the way going to the mall I saw this scene with piled steps of an escalator at Gyeongbokgung station. Because it was my first time to see those piled steps I stayed there sketching missing several times' trains to get on. 

While visiting such big malls I thought of small shops or traditional markets around those giant ones. Every time I felt them to be like vacuum cleaners or black holes which suck all around small shops. The owners would say that they contribute to the employment and distribution industry. Hope both parts go together.
