Workshop Description
Are you afraid of sketching people? This workshop will teach you to draw people that belong in and interact with their environments.
1. We will learn to draw people that look alive and moving. Not just static figures.
2. We will learn to choose actions and gestures that tell a story. Not just draw whatever we see first.
3. We will learn to draw people that interact with and belong in their environments.
Not just figures that look like they were dropped into a setting to fill a space!
Learning goals1. Feel confident that you can draw people in your urban sketches
2. Learn the basics of gesture drawing for capturing people that are full of life
3. Tell interesting and engaging stories through sketches that combine people and environments
Workshop Schedule
1. Start with Quick Exercises in Gesture DrawingWe will practice the basics of gesture drawing to quickly capture the essence of the pose and movement. We will use brush pens and soft pencils, tools that don’t allow for slow, detailed drawing, to encourage capturing big, expressive gestures.
2. Bring it all together in a sketch:
We will bring what we learnt together into sketch in which we will capture the story of a particular place through the people and their interaction with their environment or an object in their environment
To do this we will loosely block-in the object and then focus on observing and drawing people
interacting with it. By shifting the focus to the people we will come to see how much of a story can be told through people and gesture, leaving the environment very loosely defined.
We will end by sharing our sketches and seeing how everyone captures very different stories from the very same setting.
Supply list
A book of cheap paper (we will use a lot of pages) for first two exercises
A larger book with nicer paper for your final sketch
Tools: Bring a mix of tools.
Some tools for looser gesture drawing. Tools that don’t let you do details and are versatile like a very soft pencil, or a brush pen
Some tools for smaller details like a fountain pen, colored pencils, graphite pencil.
Some tools for big colored areas like watercolor, broad-tipped markers., or pastels.
Keep your kit light and portable as I prefer that you walk around and get up close to the action.
