Maindy Barracks, Cardiff
[By Dan Peterson in Cardiff, Wales]Maindy Barracks, in the Cathays area of Cardiff, opened in 1877. A military installation, originally the home of the 41st (Welch) Regiment of Foot and 69th (South Linconshire) Regiment of Foot. Home still to HQ 3rd Battalion, The Royal Welsh, HQ 157 (Welsh) Regiment RLC, 1344 (Cardiff) Squadron Air Training Corps, HQ Number 1 Welsh Wing ATC, 'A' Company, Dyfed and Glamorgan Army cadets, Wales Universities Officer Training Corps and HQ 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards, The Welsh cavalry.
I am currently the Regimental Artist for the Royal Welsh and have a studio set up within the barracks while I paint a large oil painting of the Presentation of the Colours by HM The Queen to the Royal Welsh, which happened in 2015. This drawing was done over a couple of cold December days from the balcony just outside my room. It shows the main entrance which is set in a tower like structure at the south side of the barracks. The view is effectively from the inside of the compound and therefore seldom seen by the public.
