Royal Welsh Live Firing
[By Dan Peterson in Cardiff]At the beginning of December last year I joined members of the Royal Welsh, an infantry regiment of the British Army, during live firing training at the Castlemartin Ranges in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
The Warrior AFV (Armoured Fighting Vehicle) or IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) were being fired by soldiers as their final tests for their gunnery qualification. The Warrior is armed with a 30mm canon and a 7.62mm chain gun. It has a crew of three and can carry up to seven soldiers in the rear. It is a tracked vehicle and can travel at speeds up to 45 mph (75 km/h) on road and 31 mph (50 km/h) off road.
These sketches were made using pen and ink with watercolour wash. As the colour ones are large, A3 size, pages I pencilled rough layouts first. The black and white one is just under A4 in size and was drawn with pen and ink with a number of layers of ink wash from a bottle of diluted Indian ink I carry. Some of the colour was applied indoors in the range buildings as it was so cold outside my fingers stopped working!
