Various subjects to paint in the National Library in Paris.

During the Winter period, it is sometimes difficult to organize a SketchCrawl. In Paris, we would be 50 or 60 participants. So when the Usk Paris’ team thought of a location for this event, we always payed attention to choose a sheltered and tall place where people could be comfortable. 

Last week, we spent the Saturday in the National Library (BnF), a contemporary building made of steel and glass by the French architect Dominique Perrault. When you think of this place, you don’t imagine the various subjects you can draw.
First, the famous Globes of Coronelli : it’s a pair of globes (terrestrial and celestial), about 4 meters in diameter realized by Vincenzo Coronelli and offered to Louis XIV at the end of the seventeenth century. The globe presents the state of geographical knowledge of Europeans about the civilizations of the three continents Asia, Africa, America, while the celestial globe shows the state of the sky at the birth of Louis XIV.

The building is like a long belt of steel, glass and wood around a kind of hole inhabited by a real forest. Four towers at each angle recall four large books laid along the Seine. You can guess one through the window in the watercolor above. To study (or draw) comfortable, you can sit in a wood chair with a little table to support your laptop or your sketchbook.

At the other side of the building, you discover an incredible sculpture of Louise Bourgeois. While people are eating and speaking quietly, I enjoy to capture the beautiful reflections of the red floor on the artwork.

In this picture, a part of our Usk Paris group is sketching in a fantastic concentration.
It was a really good place for this Sketchcrawl : nice subjects, large place for our group, no problem with the guards about watercolor (!) and incredible results, you can discover in our USK Paris Flickr group.
