Demonstration in front of a temple 'Jogyesa'

Jogyesa is located at downtown, Gyeonji-dong, Jongno. Because it's the district head temple of Jogye order in Seoul it's always crowded with visitors and believers. I often drop in and try to sketch the changing scenery around the temple. Since last May 22 the front gate was not of ordinary scene for a woman began one woman demonstration with a picket asking "Jaseung Out and Direct Election for Head of Jogye Order'. She kept it till Aug. 26 for 77 days. Monks and associations joined. And Monk Myungjin started to fast on Aug. 18 and kept for 17 days till Sept 4th. He was hospitalized by the dangerous physical status. But another monk Daean keeps fast after him. The movement with more slogans of cleaning old evils seemed to go larger. The 1st candle rally in front of Bosingak where the bell has been rung 33 times at the end of year was held on July 27 and keeps every Thursday. 

When I pass the spot I talk with them bringing cool drinks for them not out of full supporting but out of encouraging them on terrible hot weather. I thought I should record these scenes but I hesitated because I feared that I might hurt their feelings. Seeing them for months I couldn't delay any more. I felt it might be my duty to capture all these features. Today I carried out at last. Sketching this one I talked with a man who spreading their promoting papers to passengers. And other demonstrator and a cameraman took photos of my sketches to share in their home page saying "Visitors will like these ones."

This sketch was done in the small spot where a big tree makes large shadow and on both sides tents were set where the monk Myungjin kept fasting. Bunches of flowers are laid praying for the recovery of Myungjin Monk.

Last year Korea experienced the most peaceful candle rallies. I just expect such demonstration to bring better results for all the believers and national peace.
